Basketball Training

Basketball Training Information

Whether you're hoping to achieve the perfect jump shot or simply want to move more quickly on the court, there's a basketball training program that's right for you. From training videos to summer camps to online training guides, there are numerous resources for basketball enthusiasts who want to improve their game. Naturally most players get practice while playing on a team, but basketball training can take that practice to the next level allowing players to focus on improving a specific problem or attaining a particular goal.

Basketball training can be divided into two categories, training programs focussed on improving a play used on the court and programs dedicated to physical conditioning. Game play oriented programs focus on topics like passing, dribbling, rebounding, or shooting. They may also teach players how to develop a strong offensive or defensive style. Programs geared towards physical conditioning help players get in better shape based on the idea that this will help overall performance. During this type of training players may use circuit training, weight training or other methods of exercise to build up their leg muscles, strengthen wrists and arms, increase agility, or improve endurance.

Players of all ages and coaches can benefit from taking part in training. In camps and schools, players are usually divided up by age or skill level and may also be divided into different groups based on what position they play on the court. Camps and clinics usually offer week long or summer long training programs, where as schools may offer a variety of training opportunities throughout the year. Online directories can help you find training opportunities in your city, some of which will feature instruction by NBA level coaches and players. You may also have a local basketball league or recreation centre that offers training programs in your neighbourhood.

If you'd rather train independently, there are a wide selection of books, videos, DVDs, and training websites that can help you create a training regime suitable to practice in your own backyard or rec room. As well, there are a number of training programs that will explain how you can use aids such as toss back nets, agility ladders, weight belts, heavy or oversized basketballs, jump boxes, and shooting machines in your individual or team training. These items are available in local sports equipment stores or through online retailers.

No matter what kind of training you select, be sure to always check out the credentials of the instructor and be sure you're given a clear explanation of what will be taught during training. Does the instructor have the necessary experience to teach the intended topics? When selecting training programs for children try to observe the coach or instructor in action to ensure that you approve of their teaching methods. Does the coach give everyone equal playing time, or do the start players get more attention? A coach who "plays to win" might not meet with your approval, if you simply want your child to become more confident when handling the ball. Don't be afraid to shop around until you find a program that you're confident will be enjoyable and educational.
