Short, Powerful Training For Serious Biz Execs

The Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan offers short, highly-rated training courses for business execs. And short means short – from four to 12 info-packed days. One of the current white-hot topics is Theory and Practice of Investor Relations. It’s traditionally offered in August of each year, but you might want to book now for the 2009 session August 16 - 21.

Ross offers many other training courses to build business skills and leadership. You can dig in to coaching, human resources, leadership, management, marketing, planning, sales or supply chains, both in general and sometimes for specific industries. There are seven different courses in healthcare management. General management skill courses include Basic Management, Business Acumen, Executive Program, High Impact Teams, Leadership Success for Mid-Level Managers, Management of Managers, Managing in a Global Organization, Negotiation Strategies and Influence Skills, Positive Leadership, and Talent and Retention Management.

Training typically includes lectures, discussion, workshops, case studies and simulations.

It’s a training expense you’ll probably want the company to cover - four-day sessions may run about $5,200, and seven-day courses in the $7,400 range. Fees cover morning, afternoon, and evening sessions, and include almost all expenses except travel, including hotel accommodations and quite a few meals.

Here are some sample training course objectives to mull over.

Objectives for Theory and Practice of Investor Relations training is to:

  • Heighten your understanding of factors that influence equity valuation

  • Explore how domestic security markets function

  • Consider how an analyst processes information

  • Examine determinants of an effective disclosure strategy

  • Build your proficiency in designing, implementing, and evaluating an investor relations program

In the Mechanics of Negotiation training you can learn the theory, process and tactics of negotiations, how to apply them in various business relationships, getting personal feedback and setting goals, and special topics such as negotiating in teams, legal and ethical concerns, and cross-culture negotiations.

Another popular training topic is Finance for the Nonfinancial Manager, designed for executives promoted from business specialties other than finance, and managers in functional areas such as HR, IT, engineering, manufacturing, marketing or sales. Topics include analysis of financial statements, profitability, liquidity, valuation tools, allocation of resources, cash flow estimates and sources and costs of capital.

Managing in a Global Organization training jets through topics such as competencies, decision-making cultures, competition, influencing from afar, workforce diversity and the cost of cultural ignorance.

If your business has Asian reach, a number of training courses are available in Hong Kong, Mumbai, Bangalore, Shanghai, Singapore and Bangkok.
